Many folks would prefer for house mice to just leave instead of controlling them lethally. We understand. To keep mice away from your home and yard, start by removing any food and habitat where they like to hide.
- Firewood storage, yard debris, and dense vegetation along the ground create safe harborage for mice. Move any items stored along sides of garages, home and fence lines to eliminate or reduce hiding places for mice.
- Gardens and fruit trees should be harvested regularly to eliminate food sources. Dropped bird seed and exterior pet kibbles provide breakfast, lunch and dinner for rodents who love to hoard food back in their nest.
- Compost bins & chicken coops should be enclosed, especially along the bottom, to prevent mice from burrowing in.
Unfortunately, mice are so small their entry points frequently elude human detection by even the most experienced mouse exterminators. Any obvious gaps such as under garage doors or damaged foundations vents should be sealed with metal materials to prevent the “honest rodent” from easily breaching your home.

Do Mice Like Rosemary?
Rosemary and lavender may repel mice temporarily, if used in a high concentration in an enclosed space. Mice and rat repellents usually contain botanical oils like peppermint or garlic. But, as always, you’ll need a plan for monitoring & exclusion when using smells to get rid of mice & rodents.
How to Keep Mice from Under Hood of Car?
You can use smells mice hate like garlic, balsam oil, peppermint, cinnamon & clove to repel mice away from the engine compartment of your car. A few drops of oil on a diffuser or using real cinnamon, cloves, or garlic in a cheesecloth placed under your car might repel mice. Again, you’ll want to try this in combination with a solid outdoor rodent control strategy, and plan to rotate smells often.
Best Bait for Mouse Trap Outside?
Mice are generally curious, so placing lots of traps in enclosed boxes or areas where pets & willdife can’t get snapped is a great way to get rid of mice outside. Regular snap traps (any brand) can be baited with:
- peanut butter (fully hydrogenated)
- almond butter mixed with oats
- bacon fat
- chicken
- jam
- chocolate
- chips
- cookies
Generally anything else with high-fat and high-protein is best for bait in mouse traps outside. Sometimes mice will want carbohydrates & sugars, so use a variety of different kinds of bait for best results.
Do Mice Like Birdseed?
Yep, mice love birdseed. Since seeds are full of protein, fats and other nutrients mice crave, if you’re noticing mice or rodents around your bird feeders, consider removing them for about 6-8 weeks and calling a professional.

Plants that Keep Mice & Rats Away?
Many gardeners are familiar with using plants to repel pests. But if this is your sole strategy to control mice & rats outside, you’ll probably be dissapointed.
Citronella, lavender, rosemary, thyme, oregano have pungent smells that mice might not like. But mice are well adapted to live around smells they don’t like, like cats and humans, and will probably get used to even the most odiferous perennial plants after a while.
Does Cornmeal and Baking Soda Kill Mice?
One home remedy for mice has been said to be baking soda mixed with conrmeal. A one-to-one mixture of cornbread mix & baking soda supposedly reacts with rodents’ stomach acid to create a lethal gas they cannot expel. We personally have not tried this, but if they rats do eat it, it seems fully possible it could work.
As always, you’ll need to come up with a long term strategy, and make sure entry points are sealed.
